Prompting is not creating

You can raise millions now on a paragraph. Not a metaphor for one — an actual paragraph, a few hundred words of instruction posted to someone else’s model, the answer passed back through a clean interface and a confident logo. That is the whole machine. The intelligence is rented. The cleverness belongs to a lab in San Francisco the founder has never met. What has been added is a costume.

We should be careful here, because the tools themselves are not the problem, and we use them too. A frontier model is a genuine marvel, and reaching for one to do a job it does well is good sense, not a confession. The sleight of hand is not in using the model. It is in standing in front of it, gesturing at its work, and calling that work your own — in raising millions on an idea whose entire substance is a paragraph you could rewrite over a coffee, and presenting the paragraph as if it were a product.

It is not a product. A product is the unglamorous thousand things around the idea: the engineering that makes it hold up when ten thousand people arrive at once, the judgement about what to build and, much harder, what to leave out, the taste that decides how a thing should feel in the hand, the long quiet work of the parts no demo ever shows. A product is what is still standing at three in the morning when the clever prompt has met a real person with a real, awkward, unanticipated need. None of that is summoned by an instruction. All of it has to be made.

So when we say the AI inside Spaces is ours, we mean something we can show you. The model that makes your files searchable is one we host and run ourselves — chosen, fitted, paid for, kept honest — rather than a quiet forwarding of your files to a name you would recognise. That was more work than the alternative, and it was, frankly, why we bothered: a thing we had actually built and could stand behind, rather than a borrowed brilliance with our name painted over the door.

Prompting is a skill, and a real one; we do it daily and respect it. But it is the skill of asking well, not the skill of making, and the two have been allowed to blur in a way that flatters the asker and costs the rest of us. You cannot prompt your way to a product, any more than you can commission your way to a painting and sign it. The asking is the easy part. The work — the engineering, the care, the creativity, the thing that is genuinely yours because no one else did it — is still, stubbornly, the work.
